Medicare Part B is a type of health insurance that covers necessary outpatient services, doctor services, home health care, and occasionally preventative services. It is used for services that diagnose conditions. This is used as a sort of counter part to Part A which covers inpatient services and can be used in conjunction to Part D for prescription drugs.
Part B is primarily for services by nurses and doctors and covers things such as:
- X-rays, labs and diagnostic tests
- Vaccinations for pneumonia or influenza
- Hormonal treatments
- Chemotherapy
- Blood transfusions
- Renal dialysis
- Immunosuppressants following organ transplant
With Medicare Part B, durable medical equipment can also be covered. Things covered are:
- Prosthetics following mastectomy, or amputation
- Wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes and other items for mobility help
- Eyeglasses for after cataract surgery
- Oxygen for at home use
There is a premium for Medicare Part B insurance which is fairly standard. Some people may be contacted for additional assistance depending on their income. A late enrollment penalty may be imposed if you join Medicare Part B after the time you are first eligible. It is completely optional if you are still employed but can completely help by covering 80% of your approved services once the deductible is met.
